Canaan Kids

God has given Max Emile, also known as “Pastor,” a huge heart for the children of Canaan, just outside of Port au Prince.  Max used to live in Canaan himself and after moving to the city to find work, he purchased a piece of land there.  His vision is to build a community where the physical, educational and spiritual needs of orphans can be met but he is starting with the twenty that he ministers to on a regular basis.  He has worked and saved to provide food for those who often go days at a time without eating.  Some people reading this message have helped him financially and/or prayerfully…he is truly grateful.  He believes that since God put this on his heart, God will direct people to help him bring the vision to reality.  Mackenson Noel, who also aspires to be a pastor, has been working with Max on a consistent basis in Canaan.

Recently all of our guys worked together to bring VBS to Canaan and during the hurricane in October they worked tirelessly to get the children food and to safe shelter.  What you may not have known is that many of these children actually sleep on the unlevel ground of this mountain, unprotected from the weather and creatures.  Instead of mattresses and sheets, they use tree branches and brush to sleep on and to cover themselves with.  The days are hot and the night winds on the mountain can be chilly…and yes, there are snakes and other creepy creatures that crawl around at night.  And then there is rainy season where it rains each night.

In addition to providing regular meals for these orphans, Max wants to build a shelter for these children.  The one-story house would be made of iron and concrete; it would have five sleeping rooms, one livingroom and two bathrooms.  (No kitchen as many people in Haiti cook outside over charcoal.)  He has gotten estimates on what the total cost would be to hire local workers to build the house.  It could be built in 75 days for a cost of $20,000 US and that price is valid for three months due to the high inflation rate in Haiti.  His hope is that everyone reading this message will share it with all of their friends and their friends will share it with their friends.  Financial donations are tax deductible and can be made through World Outreach Ministries; Martin, Linda – Haiti with “Canaan Kids” designated in the notes section online.  (If a check is sent, a person can simply put “Canaan Kids” on the memo line.)

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:  to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. – James 1:27

At times Max seems overwhelmed by the responsibility of having such a great vision for these children and he does not understand why so many in the world have so much while others have so little. He shared with me that God told him that God has given much to some so they can share with those who have nothing.  The need in a developing country (for basic things like food, clean water, and shelter!) is SO great that it is difficult to convey that need to people living in a developed country without the description sounding sensationalized.  In fact, 5% of the cost to have the shelter built will go to feed the workers building it!  (Food is part of their wages and they will work from 6am-6pm each day.)  The need is great and we need your help.

As I close, thank you for all you have done to help with this mission God has us on. Please continue to pray for us and to pray for how God wants you to be involved. Whether He is calling you to serve financially, prayerfully or in some other way, please listen to that call and respond accordingly.
